Challenge
The design for this high traffic urban street in downtown St. Louis needed to improve lighting, maximize durability and hold up aesthetically with the previous two phases, which had significantly higher budgets. With historic buildings lining the street and basements extending to the curb, Lawrence Group also had to work with individual building owners in addition to city representatives to ensure project success.
Solution
To provide value and durability, large underground tree pits with non-compacted soil were created so trees could reach maturity without being replaced. LED fixtures were used to improve site and pedestrian lighting. Long linear promenade pavers in varying shades of gray reflect the surrounding urban context and give a more modern aesthetic. The streetscape project extended from 7th Street to Memorial Drive.
