The University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL) selected Lawrence Group for a full interior renovation of the historic Benton Hall building. Home to the departments of biology, chemistry, biochemistry, physics, astronomy and the university’s joint engineering program, Benton Hall forms the central hub of UMSL’s 365,000-square-foot Benton Stadler Science Complex. Dedicated to the study of science, the newly renovated facility features lecture rooms, collaborative teaching classrooms, laboratories as faculty and administrative space.
The project included a complete replacement of the MEP/FP and life safety systems, integrating a modern mechanical system within the constraints of the existing building. With the structure’s low beam heights, duct routing was thoughtfully designed to create minimal impact within the spaces.
Additionally, Lawrence Group also worked closely with chemistry students to develop a pattern of a caffeine molecule that was transformed into a large wall tile design in the main corridor, providing wayfinding.
The project was completed three months ahead of schedule.
