KWK Architects, a Lawrence Group Company, recently awarded the $32M renovation of Kansas State University’s Strong Complex. The Strong residential complex is made up of three residence halls: Boyd, Putnam, and Van Zile. The University’s vision for the project is to renovate the Strong Complex to serve as home to the University Honors Program and to create a diverse living-learning community anchored in leadership, engagement, and service where high-achieving students are inspired and supported to thrive academically and personally.
In association with HTK Architects of Topeka, KS, all three buildings will be improved programmatically, with upgraded and modernized spaces, reimagined community spaces, upgraded building systems, and enhanced ADA accessibility.
Boyd includes a new lower level with the Honor Program, including student support spaces, meeting rooms, tutoring spaces, an open common kitchen, and music practice rooms. Construction is to begin in the Fall 2025.
Van Zile includes the complete renovation of the first-floor dining hall, including a grab-and-go self-supported market by Amazon, one main traditional food server, a restaurant, and a coffee shop designed to be open 24/7 for students to use the open spaces.
The total bed count for the complex is approximately 500 students in traditional doubles and suites.
