Bringing Nature into Design for an Active Community

Epoque Golden is a luxury apartment community nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Lawrence Group provided architectural design services for the multi-family development that appeals to vibrant, healthy 55+ residents who want to lead an active lifestyle centered on wellness and one-of-a-kind experiences.

Our team implemented creative solutions to address design challenges that threatened fundamental goals of the community. The development is located just west of a well-traveled highway and exterior amenity space was integral to the design. Noise mitigation strategies were implemented in the building envelope to limit nuisance sound for highway facing apartments and site walls were utilized to buffer the outdoor amenity deck.

One of the biggest challenges was ensuring residents had access to coveted views of the Front Range. Epoque’s ground floor elevation is set just below the highest floor of a neighboring, four-story structure to ensure views from most of the south facing apartments. Each apartment features nearly floor to ceiling glass in the main living space as well as over-sized bedroom windows. The fenestration configuration and size respond to the wind velocity and resulting design pressure for this region. In addition, all but five of the 120 apartments have balconies or patios to expand the livable space and connection to the outdoor environment. We studied multiple options before settling on the final design, which ultimately maximizes the amount of glass in each apartment while balancing the requirements for natural ventilation. The result ensures residents at Epoque enjoy the comfortable lifestyle they seek in their new home.

Additionally, this urban community offers a full range of services focused on providing convenience and opportunity for adventure to balance work and play. While Epoque was designed under a different cultural climate than we face today, residents are still able to fully utilize both interior and exterior amenity spaces in a capacity that suits their comfort level. A lifestyle program of luxury services, created to support the 55+ market, allows residents to tailor their experience. Residents at Epoque Golden have leaned into the flexibility of the indoor and outdoor amenity spaces to maintain their desired luxe and nature motived living.

Resort-style amenity spaces – including a great room, pub/game room, fitness studio, outdoor gathering space and a pool and spa – create a sense of community among neighbors. Focused on comfort and convince, the concierge-style services have been heavily utilized. Arranging deliveries, room service meals and other perks have been a favorite among residents. The modern design, physical location, amenities and service options inspire a sophisticated way of life for working adults and recent retirees to live happy, healthy lives.
