Grammy-nominated songwriter and producer Gregg Wattenberg partnered with Lawrence Group to create Artist House, a cutting-edge recording studio that redefines creative workspaces while emphasizing immersive, human-centric design.
To realize this ambitious vision, the team transformed a rare 19,000 square-foot space within 60 Charlton Street, a 1920s Hudson Square industrial building repositioned into a thriving office redevelopment in the heart of New York City. The space, selected after extensive site testing, offers soaring ceilings, an abundance of natural light, and proximity to a thriving creative ecosystem.
The main studio opens onto a grand second-floor hall that is designed to be a creative concourse as opposed to a traditional lobby, lined with 20-foot-tall concrete columns. The ceiling is animated by daylight and a custom ceiling installation of abstracted guitar-pick forms with programmable LED lighting. Acoustics were treated as a design material, shaping chamfered walls, floating ceiling planes, and tuned diffusers into a sculptural soundscape.
Studios radiate from this shared space in varied formats, including a stage-ready performance suite that merges recording and live audience capability, a sought-after feature in the city. The upper level extends the collaborative ethos with glass-walled offices, social hubs, and open work zones, reinforcing transparency and connection. From furnishings to spatial flow, Artist House inspires creativity and a holistic environment for artistry and innovation.
