Sam Houston State University, Student Health and Counseling Center

Challenge

Once separate facilities, Sam Houston State University set out to bring the University Health Center and Counseling Center under one roof. The new Student Health and Counseling Center was envisioned a “one-stop-shop” for students’ physical and behavioral health while still providing each department with its own separate, dedicated space.

Solution

To address the University’s program, the health center was designed to be self-contained and to occupy the larger ground floor with the counseling center and administrative functions occupying the upper level. A prominent entry lobby with a two-story staircase knits the two disciplines together leading from the first floor Health Center to the second floor Counseling Center.

The new facility provides health and counseling services and education to currently enrolled students, minimizing health-related disruptions to their academic pursuits.
