The Depot on Main

Founded in 1881 at the site of its Train Depot, the City of Buda would develop a thriving cattle and rail industry while serving as a hub for westward expansion through Texas. However, a modernization effort saw the Depot’s closure in 1961, severing the city from its most historic structure. The building was saved by private collectors and relocated after years of deterioration.

Understanding the historical significance and potential of the site, the Buda Economic Development Corporation (EDC) explored options to bring the Depot home while re-establishing the site as the City’s cultural core. Working with adaptive reuse experts at Lawrence Group, options were developed for the site to support multiple event types such as festivals, markets, and concerts, as well as a year-round retail and small business incubator within the original Depot structure. The design team underwent extensive review with public agencies and civic stakeholders, utilizing findings from the surveys to inform the final programmatic concepts.

The Depot on Main repositions the City of Buda’s historic train depot and community gathering space and economic catalyst, re-centering the city on its historic and cultural core. The structure has been restored to original specifications while receiving functional improvements to support a modern retail storefront. The Depot on Main draws visual connectivity from the historical district on Main Street through plantings and architectural paving while integrating into the visual fabric of the nearby Welcome Center and Greenbelt Park.

Seeking to preserve the building’s original architectural elements while keeping accessibility as a key project goal, inclusive design strategies such as a new universally designed entry, provides seamless access throughout the site and within the historic Train Depot Deck.
